Rear Bumper Repair
If you got tapped from behind, you’re in the one category of collision where somebody else’s insurance almost always pays the whole bill and you pay no deductible. The trick is not letting them close the file before anyone checks what’s behind the cover.
Rear covers hide the trunk floor, the rear body panel, the exhaust hangers, and on newer cars the blind-spot radars — all of which move in a hit that barely marks the plastic.

Why a rear tap is worse than it looks
Rear bumper structures are shallower than front ones. Up front, engineers get a whole engine bay of crush distance to work with; at the back, they have inches. That’s why a 10 mph parking-lot bump can leave the cover looking almost fine while the absorber is fully collapsed and the rear body panel behind it has taken a set.
The parts that quietly get hurt in a rear hit: the rear body panel (the metal the trunk seals against), the trunk floor and spare well, the exhaust hangers, the tail lamp housings and their sealing gaskets, and on many 2017-and-newer vehicles the blind-spot and rear cross-traffic radars mounted inside the rear corners of the bumper.
The single best DIY diagnostic is the trunk. Open and close it. If the latch feels stiff, the lid sits proud on one corner, or the seal whistles on the freeway, the rear body panel moved — and that’s a structural line item, not a bumper line item. Water leaking into the spare well after the first rain is the same story discovered three months late.
One more thing specific to rear impacts on hybrids and EVs: the high-voltage battery pack or a hybrid battery module often sits under the rear seat or trunk floor. Any rear hit on a Prius, RAV4 Hybrid, Model 3, or similar gets a high-voltage isolation check before we do anything else.
After a rear-end hit: drive or don’t
Drivable — cover scuffed, trunk normal
Trunk opens and closes cleanly, tail lights work, no rattles at speed. Drive it and schedule. Get photos and the other driver’s insurance info before anything else.
Get it looked at — trunk sticking or lights fogging
A stiff trunk latch or condensation in a tail lamp means the rear body panel or the lamp housing shifted. Drivable, but it belongs on a lift this week before rain gets into the trunk.
Tow it — exhaust dragging, EV warning, or wheel rub
Dragging exhaust, a high-voltage service warning on a hybrid or EV, or a rear tire contacting sheet metal means the impact reached structure. Don’t drive it.

How we handle a rear bumper
Rear jobs get a water test and a trunk-fit check that front jobs don’t.
Cover off, absorber and rear body panel inspected
The absorber tells us the impact energy immediately. A collapsed absorber with a clean cover means the hit was real and the rear body panel needs measuring.
Blind-spot radar location check
Rear corner radars mount inside the bumper on brackets. We verify each module’s mounting plane and check for stored faults on the pre-repair scan before reassembly.
Rear body panel and trunk floor measurement
If the panel moved, it gets pulled back to factory dimension on the bench before the new cover goes anywhere near it. Fitting a cover to a bent panel is how you get permanent uneven gaps.
Refinish with quarter panel blend
Rear covers meet both quarter panels, so metallics get blended into both sides. Hard-lining the color at the gap is visible from ten feet on any pearl or metallic finish.
Water test
After reassembly the trunk area gets hosed and inspected from inside with a light. Post-rear-impact water leaks into the spare well are the most common comeback in this whole category and the easiest to prevent.
Rear sensor calibration and post-repair scan
Backup sonar re-seated to factory angle, cross-traffic and blind-spot radars recalibrated, post-repair scan run to zero codes. Report goes in your file.
Rear bumper cost in 2026
Rear covers are generally cheaper in parts than front covers — published data puts rear bumper replacement parts at roughly $350–$1,000 with $150–$400 in paint labor — but rear hits are more likely to carry structural line items behind them.
Scuff, scrape, or clean crack in the rear cover. Plastic weld, fill, blend into one quarter panel. 2–3 days. Usually the whole claim on a slow-roll parking lot tap.
New cover, absorber, tail lamp if cracked, backup sonar transfer, blind-spot radar recalibration. Published cosmetic rear-end work sits at $1,200–$2,800. 4–6 days.
Add rear body panel repair or sectioning, trunk lid, both tail lamps, and structural measurement. Published moderate rear-end ranges run $3,500–$6,500. 2–3 weeks.
Rear-end repairs in published 2026 data span from about $300 for cover-only work to $15,000+ when frame rails, the drivetrain, and ADAS sensors are involved. The step that costs the most money to skip is the teardown — hidden damage found at delivery is a supplement fight; hidden damage found on day one is just a line item.

Rear-ended? You almost certainly pay nothing
California follows the basic speed and following-distance rules that make the trailing driver liable in the overwhelming majority of rear-end collisions. Practically, that means you file a third-party property damage claim against the other driver’s liability coverage, you pay no deductible, and you’re entitled to a rental while your car is down.
Since January 1, 2025, California’s minimum property damage liability limit is $15,000, up from $5,000 where it had sat since 1967. That change matters enormously in this category: rear-end repairs that used to blow through a $5,000 minimum policy and leave you chasing the difference now usually fit inside the at-fault driver’s limits.
If the other driver was uninsured or fled, don’t stop there. Your own uninsured motorist property damage coverage, or your collision coverage with a collision deductible waiver, is designed for exactly this. See hit-and-run repair for the claim path.
One thing rear-end victims routinely leave on the table: diminished value. If your car carried a structural repair on its record because someone else hit you, its market value dropped even after a perfect repair, and in California that loss is claimable against the at-fault carrier.
Don’t let the other insurer settle before teardown. A signed release on a $900 photo estimate makes the $3,200 rear body panel your problem. We inspect first, then agree on a number.

Rear-end damage questions
The other driver wants to pay me cash instead of involving insurance. Should I?
Only after you have a real teardown estimate in hand. Rear hits hide damage behind the cover, and cash offers are almost always benchmarked to the visible scuff. If you take $800 and the rear body panel turns out to be bent, you’ve paid for their accident. Get the written estimate first, then decide.
My trunk won’t close properly since I was rear-ended. Is that expensive?
It depends on whether the lid itself is tweaked or the rear body panel behind the bumper moved. A misaligned lid can sometimes be adjusted at the hinges and striker for very little. A displaced rear body panel needs measurement and pulling on the bench and is a genuine structural line item — several thousand dollars, and it belongs on the claim.
Will a rear bumper repair show up on my Carfax?
A cosmetic bumper repair paid out of pocket generally does not. An insurance claim can be reported, and structural repairs are the ones that actually influence what a buyer offers later. If you weren’t at fault, that history-based value loss is what a diminished value claim addresses.
Water is getting into my trunk after the accident. Is that from the bumper?
Not from the cover itself — from the rear body panel or a tail lamp gasket that shifted in the impact. It’s extremely common and often discovered weeks later at the first real rain. Bring it in; we water-test the whole rear closure and reseal or realign whatever failed.
Do backup cameras and sensors need to be recalibrated after rear bumper work?
Sonar pucks need correct seating and angle rather than a software calibration, but rear-corner blind-spot and cross-traffic radars do require a calibration procedure, and many vehicles need a rear camera aim verification too. We run a pre-repair and post-repair scan on every job so nothing leaves with a stored fault.
How soon do I have to get this repaired for the insurance claim to stay valid?
There’s no fixed deadline in California for repairing, but claims must generally be filed within your policy’s notice window, and the longer you wait the harder it gets to attribute damage to that specific accident. Practically: file within days, get the estimate within a week or two, and schedule the actual repair whenever it suits you.
