Parking Lot Damage Repair

Nobody’s hurt, nothing’s leaking, and the car drives fine — but there’s a crease down your door from a cart, a gray stripe from a parking structure pillar, or a bumper corner someone reversed into. Low-speed damage has its own economics, and they usually favor paying cash.

Our job here is telling you the cheapest repair that actually looks right, which is often not the one that involves paint.

Low-speed damage types

Five things that happen to cars in Valley parking lots

Door dings. Someone’s door into your door, or a cart rolling downhill in a sloped lot. If the paint is unbroken this is textbook paintless dent repair — the metal gets pushed back from behind and your factory finish stays intact. Fast, and the cheapest legitimate repair we offer.

Pillar and post scrapes. Concrete columns in structures around Northridge Fashion Center and the Panorama Mall leave a distinctive long gray scrape, usually across a rear door and quarter panel. Concrete is abrasive, so these almost always go through the clear coat into the color, which means refinish rather than polish.

Bumper corner taps. Reversing contact at 2 to 5 mph. The cover scuffs or cracks at the corner, and the mounting tabs behind it often shear even when the plastic looks fine — which is why a bumper corner that got tapped sometimes starts sagging weeks later. See hanging bumper repair.

Mirror strikes. Common in tight structures and narrow apartment carports. The housing cracks or the whole mirror folds past its stop. On newer vehicles the mirror may hold a blind-spot indicator or a surround-view camera, which turns a $150 part into a $600 part with a calibration requirement.

Wheel and rocker curb rash. Pulling in too tight. Alloy wheel edges get gouged and the plastic rocker extension scrapes. Both are cosmetic, both are repairable, and both are worth doing before a lease return where they’ll be charged at retail rates.

Drive it or tow it?

Is any of this urgent?

Not urgent — dents and scuffs with paint intact

No corrosion risk, no safety issue. Fix it whenever it bothers you enough, or before a lease turn-in or sale where it costs you real money.

Fix within a few months — paint broken to bare metal

The Valley is dry, but any break to bare metal will eventually corrode, and the lower door crimp and rocker are where it starts because water sits there. Seal or repair before it spreads under the paint.

Actually urgent — mirror, lamp, or bumper hanging loose

A dangling mirror or a cracked lamp lens is a citable equipment defect and a safety issue at night. A loose bumper corner will progress. These get handled promptly.

Left a note on someone’s car, or found one on yours? Under California Vehicle Code §20002 that written notice is a legal requirement, not a courtesy.

How we approach parking lot damage

Same-day on many PDR and polish jobs. The assessment is where the money gets saved.

1

Paint-depth and light-board assessment

We check whether the damage broke the clear coat and read dents under a reflective board. This five-minute step decides between a $195 repair and a $900 one, so it happens before any quote.

2

Polish first when polish will do

A lot of parking lot “scratches” are actually paint transfer sitting on top of your clear coat. Those come off with compound and polish for a fraction of a refinish. We test a small area and show you the result before quoting anything bigger.

3

PDR where the paint is intact

Door dings and cart dents get pushed out from behind through the trim access. No filler, no paint, factory finish preserved — which also means no paint-history impact on resale. Details: paintless dent repair.

4

Spot refinish for broken paint

Where clear or color is gone, we sand, prime, seal, and spray the affected area, blending into the panel and its neighbors. Spot repair on a single panel edge is far cheaper than a whole-panel respray and reads identically at any normal viewing distance.

5

Bumper tab and mirror hardware check

Tapped bumper corners get their retainers and side brackets inspected and replaced, because sheared tabs are what turn a scuff into a hanging cover two months later. Mirror housings and any camera or blind-spot module get verified and calibrated.

6

Wheel and rocker cosmetic work

Alloy wheel curb rash is repaired and refinished; plastic rocker extensions get re-textured and refinished so the grain matches factory rather than reading glossy.

2026 pricing

Parking lot damage cost in 2026

This is the one damage category where the whole repair usually sits below a deductible. Published 2026 pricing: PDR from about $195 for a single ding, clear-coat scratch work $150–$400 professionally, paint-layer scratches $300–$800.

Minor — polish or single-dent PDR$150 – $450

Paint transfer polished off, or one door ding pushed out with PDR. Same day in most cases. No paint involved, factory finish preserved.

Moderate — spot refinish one or two panels$500 – $1,400

Pillar scrape through the color, scuffed bumper corner, or a dent with broken paint. Sand, prime, spray, blend. 2–4 days.

Larger — bumper replacement or multi-panel$1,400 – $2,800

New bumper cover with sensors, mirror with camera and calibration, or damage across three or more panels. Published bumper cover replacement runs $800–$2,000 before sensors. 4–7 days.

Lease-return math worth knowing: dealer damage assessments charge retail body-shop rates per panel, and they charge for every ding. Getting four door dings PDR’d before turn-in commonly costs a fraction of what the lease-end inspection would bill for the same damage.

Insurance on low-speed damage

Usually: don’t file. Here’s when you should.

Most parking lot damage costs less than a California deductible. A $300 PDR job against a $500 or $1,000 deductible means your insurer pays nothing and you’ve added a claim to your record, which follows you in the industry CLUE database when you shop for coverage. Pay cash and keep the file clean.

File when the number is genuinely large — a bumper cover with sensors and calibration, a mirror with a surround-view camera, or damage spread across several panels can easily pass $2,500. Also file when the damage came with a struck pedestrian or another vehicle, because then there’s liability exposure and you want your carrier informed.

If you know who did it and they’re insured, this is a third-party liability claim against their coverage with no deductible for you. Get their information at the scene. If they left, it’s a hit-and-run: file a police report and read hit-and-run repair for the coverage path.

One item people miss: damage from a shopping cart in a store’s lot, or from a falling object in a parking structure, may be a premises liability claim against the property owner rather than an auto claim at all. Report it to management in writing the same day and keep the incident number.

Tell us it’s a cash job at the estimate. Cash pricing is different from insurance pricing because there’s no supplement cycle to absorb, and we’ll sequence work to fit a budget you name.

Parking lot damage FAQ

Low-speed damage questions

Is it worth filing a claim for a parking lot dent?

Usually not. Most single-panel parking lot damage lands between $200 and $900, which is at or below typical deductibles, and the claim goes on your record either way. File when the repair is genuinely well above your deductible — sensor-equipped bumper covers and camera mirrors are the usual triggers.

Can you get a concrete pillar scrape out without repainting?

Sometimes the gray is transfer sitting on your clear coat, and it polishes right off — we test that first because it’s the cheapest possible outcome. But concrete is abrasive, so most pillar scrapes go into the color and need spot refinishing. We’ll show you the polished test patch so you can see which one you have.

Someone left a note admitting they hit my car. What now?

Photograph the note, then contact them and get their insurance information rather than accepting cash sight-unseen. Get an estimate first. If the damage turns out to be $1,800 rather than the $300 they assumed, an early cash handshake leaves you paying the difference with no claim to fall back on.

How much does shopping cart damage cost to fix?

A single cart dent with intact paint is typically PDR at roughly $195–$450. A cart that scraped along the panel and broke paint needs spot refinish, usually $500–$1,000 on one panel. The distinguishing test is whether your fingernail catches on the damage.

Will my car look identical after a spot repair?

On a single panel with a proper blend into its neighbors, yes at normal viewing distance and in daylight — that’s the standard we work to. What a spot repair can’t do is match a badly sun-faded panel perfectly if we only spray part of it, which is why we blend outward rather than stopping at an edge.

Do you fix curb rash on wheels?

Yes, on alloy wheels — the gouged edge is filled, shaped, and refinished to match the wheel’s original finish. Painted, machined-face, and chrome-look finishes all take different processes and price differently. Wheels with structural cracks or bends get replaced rather than repaired; we don’t cosmetically repair a compromised wheel.
