Paintless dent repair (PDR) is the fastest, cheapest way to fix a dent — when it’s the right kind of dent. A door ding from a parking lot, a hail dimple, a minor crease that didn’t break the paint: those can usually be pushed back to factory-smooth in a couple of hours, for a fraction of what a traditional body repair would cost, and without touching a drop of paint. XP Auto Center has been doing PDR in the San Fernando Valley for over 20 years. If you’re near San Fernando, Northridge, Sylmar, Pacoima, or Burbank and looking for paintless dent repair near you, call (818) 336-1000 for a free look.
What Paintless Dent Repair Actually Is
PDR is a specialized skill — not something a general body tech can pick up in a weekend. A trained PDR technician accesses the back of the damaged panel (through a door skin, under a fender liner, sometimes by removing tail lights or interior trim) and uses long steel rods and specially-shaped tips to push the dent out from behind. To see what they’re doing, they read the reflection of a striped light board off the panel surface. When the reflection lines go from bent to straight, the metal is back where it belongs.
The whole point is that the paint is never touched. No sanding, no primer, no color matching, no clear coat. Your original factory finish stays exactly as it left the plant — which matters enormously for resale value, warranty, and the way the panel looks under sunlight two years later. A traditional repair, no matter how good the shop, is a refinished panel. A PDR repair is your original panel, made straight again.
PDR vs Traditional Bodywork — Which Do I Need?
This is the question every customer wants answered when they walk in. Here’s the honest breakdown:
- Choose PDR when: The paint is intact — no cracks, no chips, no bare metal. The dent is on a flat or gently curved panel (door, roof, fender, hood, quarter panel). The metal isn’t stretched or torn. Common cases: door dings, hail damage, minor parking-lot dents, small creases from a shopping cart or bike.
- Choose traditional bodywork when: Paint is cracked, chipped, or scraped. The dent is on a sharp body line, panel edge, or seam. The metal is stretched (deep dent with a “stretched” feel). There’s underlying structural damage. The panel needs to be replaced because the damage is too severe. Common cases: collision damage, deep creases with paint damage, dents on bumpers (which are usually plastic, not metal, and PDR doesn’t work on plastic).
- The gray area: Dent on a flat panel but with a small paint chip? Sometimes PDR + a small paint touch-up is still cheaper and faster than a full refinish. We’ll tell you honestly when you’re in that zone. A dent near a body line is doable by a skilled tech but usually costs more because it takes longer.
If you’re not sure which category you’re in, bring the car by or send us a photo through our quote form. We’ll give you a straight answer — and if PDR isn’t the right call, we’ll tell you and quote the traditional body repair instead.
What PDR Costs and How Long It Takes
PDR pricing is per-dent, based on size and location. Typical ranges we quote:
- Small door ding (quarter-sized or smaller): $75 to $150 per dent
- Medium dent (baseball-sized, flat panel): $150 to $300
- Large dent or one near a body line: $300 to $500+
- Hail damage (whole car): Usually priced as a full package after inspection — anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand depending on the dent count. Most is covered by comprehensive insurance.
Compare that to a traditional refinish repair on the same panel — typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the panel and paint code — and PDR usually saves you 60-80%. Timeline is just as favorable: most single-dent PDR jobs are same-day, often finished in 1-3 hours. Multi-dent or hail jobs run 1-3 days.
Common PDR Repairs We Handle
- Parking lot door dings: The bread and butter. Someone opens their door into yours at Costco, the Fashion Center, or Ralph’s — you have a small round dent, paint intact. Classic PDR.
- Hail damage: When a storm rolls through, we can handle the whole car. Roof, hood, and trunk take the worst of it. Most comprehensive insurance policies pay for hail PDR with no deductible impact on your rates.
- Shopping cart dents: Usually a small crease on a door or fender. Almost always PDR-repairable if the paint held.
- Minor bumps and creases: Backed into a low post, someone tapped your fender in traffic, a bike fell over onto your quarter panel. If the metal moved but the paint didn’t crack, we can push it back.
- Body line dents: Trickier, but a skilled tech can walk a dent across a body line with the right rods and patience. Bring it in — we’ll tell you if it’s doable.
Why PDR Preserves Value (and Why Insurance Loves It)
Every time a panel gets refinished, that shows up on a paint meter reading — and any future buyer with a used-car pre-purchase inspection will see it. Cars with all-original paint sell for more, plain and simple. PDR fixes the dent without touching the paint, so as far as the meter is concerned, nothing ever happened.
Insurance companies love PDR for the same reason a smart consumer does: it’s dramatically cheaper. On a hail claim in particular, going PDR instead of full refinish can drop the claim from $8,000 to $2,000 — which is why most carriers actively prefer PDR when it’s viable. We handle hail claims routinely with Allstate, State Farm, Geico, Farmers, Progressive, and Mercury. We’ll write the estimate, submit it, and coordinate the whole process.
What PDR Can’t Fix
PDR isn’t magic. It doesn’t work when:
- The paint is broken. Cracked, chipped, or scraped paint means the panel needs to be refinished no matter what happens to the underlying dent. At that point traditional bodywork is the play.
- The metal is stretched. A deep, sharp impact can stretch the sheet metal past its elastic limit. It won’t return to flat. You can tell by pushing on it — if it pops or feels loose, it’s stretched.
- The dent is on plastic. Most modern bumpers are plastic, not metal. Plastic has memory but doesn’t respond to PDR rods the same way. Plastic bumper dents are usually handled with heat and pressure or replacement.
- The tech can’t access the back of the panel. Rare, but on some newer cars with heavy sound-deadening or bonded reinforcement, the back of the panel is blocked. We’ll tell you if that’s the case.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does paintless dent repair cost?
Typically $75 to $300 per dent, depending on size and location. Small door dings run $75-$150. Medium dents on flat panels run $150-$300. Larger dents or ones near body lines run $300-$500. Hail damage on a whole car is quoted as a package. Bring the car in for a free look and exact number.
Can PDR fix hail damage?
Yes — hail damage is one of the best-case scenarios for PDR because the dents are small, the paint is almost always intact, and the panels affected (roof, hood, trunk) are flat and accessible. Most comprehensive insurance policies cover hail PDR with no rate impact.
How long does PDR take?
A single dent is usually a same-day repair — often 1-3 hours. Multi-dent jobs (three or four dings across the car) typically run same-day to next-day. Hail damage on a full car runs 1-3 days depending on dent count.
Will PDR damage my paint?
No. That’s the entire point. A properly done PDR repair never touches the paint — no sanding, no clear coat, nothing. Your original factory finish is preserved exactly. This is why PDR protects resale value in a way traditional bodywork can’t.
What dents can’t be fixed with PDR?
Dents with broken or cracked paint, dents on sharp body lines and panel edges (much harder, sometimes impossible), dents with stretched metal, and dents on plastic parts like bumpers. Also panels where the back side is inaccessible. If PDR isn’t the right call, we’ll tell you and quote a traditional repair.
Does insurance cover PDR?
Comprehensive coverage generally covers hail and weather-related PDR. Collision coverage covers PDR when it’s part of a collision claim. Cosmetic damage from parking lots is usually not covered unless you have specific dent coverage. We work with all major insurance carriers and can help you sort out what’s covered.
