Hit and Run: How to Get Your Car Repaired
They hit you and left. Frustrating, common in the Valley, and — importantly — not the end of your ability to get paid. There are three coverage paths that apply when the other driver can’t be identified, and the order you do things in determines whether they work.
Step one is a police report, today. Everything downstream depends on it.

The first 24 hours matter more than the repair
File a police report immediately. Under California Vehicle Code §20002, a driver involved in an accident causing property damage must stop and provide identification or leave written notice; failing to do so is a misdemeanor hit-and-run. Your report does two things: it creates the official record your insurer requires, and it gives police a case if the vehicle is later identified. Insurers routinely deny uninsured motorist claims that have no report.
Photograph everything before you move or clean anything. Damage from multiple angles, paint transfer, broken plastic on the ground, the position of your car, the surrounding scene. Paint transfer in particular is physical evidence — a lab can match it to a make and color range if a suspect vehicle turns up.
Canvass for cameras the same day. Residential doorbell cameras, business security systems, and parking structure cameras across the Valley typically overwrite footage within 3 to 30 days. Knock on doors, ask the store, ask the property manager. This is the single action that most often turns an unsolved hit-and-run into an identified driver, and it has a hard deadline nobody tells you about.
Then notify your insurer. Give them the report number. Which coverage applies depends on what you carry, and that’s the next section.
Which coverage pays for a hit-and-run
Collision coverage
The most common path. Your collision coverage pays for the repair minus your deductible, regardless of whether the other driver is ever found. If they’re identified later, your carrier pursues them and you typically get the deductible back.
Collision deductible waiver (CDW)
A California-specific option that waives your collision deductible when an identified, negligent uninsured driver hits you. Check your declarations page — many drivers carry it without knowing.
Uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD)
Covers your vehicle damage, typically with a $250 deductible, and in California is generally only available if you don’t carry collision. UMPD on a hit-and-run usually requires physical contact plus a police report.
If you carry liability only with no collision and no UMPD, there is no coverage for your vehicle in an unsolved hit-and-run. It’s a hard answer, and it’s why we lay these out plainly.
How we handle a hit-and-run repair
Beyond the bodywork, hit-and-run files need documentation most repairs don’t.
Evidence-grade damage documentation
We photograph and describe impact height, direction, and paint transfer color before any cleaning or disassembly. If a suspect vehicle is identified later, that record is what supports the match — and it also refutes any suggestion the damage was pre-existing.
Impact reconstruction for the claim file
Adjusters on unwitnessed claims scrutinize whether the damage matches the reported event. We write a plain-language description of impact geometry — height, angle, direction of force — that lines up the physical evidence with your account.
Full damage inventory, not just the obvious panel
Hit-and-runs are frequently parking incidents where a fleeing driver contacts more than one panel. We inspect the whole side and underbody, because damage found after a claim closes is damage you pay for.
Standard collision repair to OEM specification
From there it’s ordinary work done properly: structural measurement if warranted, OEM-spec panel replacement and refinish, sensor calibration, and pre- and post-repair scans.
Rental and total-loss coordination
Uninsured motorist claims can move slowly. We coordinate rental timing with your adjuster and, if the numbers approach your vehicle’s value, walk you through the total-loss decision before it’s made for you.
Lifetime workmanship warranty on body and paint
Same warranty as every other repair we do, regardless of which coverage paid for it.
Hit-and-run repair cost in 2026
Cost depends entirely on what they hit, so the useful frame is your deductible. Parking-lot hit-and-runs cluster at the low end; freeway sideswipes and struck parked cars can be anything.
One or two panels scraped or dented, refinish with blend, no structural involvement. Published scratch and panel repair ranges run $300–$800 for paint-layer work and $800–$2,500+ for deep gouges. 3–6 days.
Door and quarter panel, mirror, bumper cover, wheel damage. Often accompanied by a broken lamp assembly. 1–2 weeks.
Frame or pillar involvement, airbag deployment, suspension damage. Published structural collision ranges reach $10,000–$15,000+. 3–6 weeks, plus a real total-loss conversation.
Two coverage notes that change your actual out-of-pocket: a UMPD claim typically carries a $250 deductible, materially lower than most collision deductibles, and a California collision deductible waiver can reduce your collision deductible to zero when the at-fault uninsured driver is identified. Read your declarations page before you assume what you owe.

Unidentified driver, identified coverage
The core problem in a hit-and-run is that there’s no liability carrier to bill, so the claim has to come from your own policy. California’s uninsured motorist framework exists precisely for this: a hit-and-run driver is treated as an uninsured motorist, and standard California uninsured motorist limits are $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, with $15,000 for property damage on UMPD.
The catch that trips people up: in California, UMPD is generally only sold to drivers who don’t carry collision coverage. If you have collision, that’s your vehicle-damage path, and UMPD isn’t in play for the car. UMPD claims also generally require actual physical contact and a police report — a driver who ran you off the road without touching you creates a much harder claim.
Look for the collision deductible waiver on your declarations page. It’s a California option that waives your collision deductible when a negligent uninsured motorist hits you. If the fleeing driver is later identified and turns out to be uninsured, that waiver can put your deductible back in your pocket.
Practical advice: don’t wait for the investigation. Open the claim, get the estimate, start the repair under collision coverage. Police identification, when it happens at all, often takes months, and your carrier’s subrogation department can chase reimbursement long after your car is back on the road.
Bring us the police report number and your declarations page at the estimate. We’ll tell you which coverage this claim runs under before you talk to the adjuster.

Hit-and-run questions
Do I really need a police report if nobody saw it?
Yes. It is the single most important document in the file. Insurers routinely deny or delay uninsured motorist claims lacking a report, and without one an adjuster has no independent record that the event happened at all. In Los Angeles you can typically file a property-damage-only hit-and-run report online or at a station; do it within 24 hours.
Will my rates go up if I file a hit-and-run claim I didn’t cause?
California regulations restrict surcharging drivers for accidents in which they weren’t principally at fault, and a hit-and-run where you were parked or lawfully driving falls squarely in that category. The claim still appears in your history, which can affect shopping comparisons, but the not-at-fault protection is real.
What if I find the driver a week later from a neighbor’s camera?
Excellent outcome. Give the footage and any plate information to the police to add to the existing report, and to your carrier’s subrogation department. Once the driver is identified, your carrier pursues their insurer or them directly, and you generally get your deductible refunded when they recover.
My car was hit in a parking lot with a note-free dent. Is that a hit-and-run?
Legally, yes. California Vehicle Code §20002 requires a driver who damages property — including a parked car — to stop and leave identifying information. Leaving without doing so is misdemeanor hit-and-run, whether it happened at 40 mph on the 210 or at 2 mph in a Northridge parking structure.
Can you tell what kind of car hit me from the damage?
Sometimes, roughly. Impact height narrows it to a class of vehicle — a truck bumper strikes far higher than a sedan’s. Paint transfer gives a color and, under lab analysis, sometimes a manufacturer paint system. We document both in detail, which is more useful than most people expect once a suspect vehicle appears.
If I have liability-only coverage, am I out of luck?
For the vehicle damage in an unsolved hit-and-run, unfortunately yes — liability coverage pays for damage you cause to others, not damage to your own car. If the driver is later identified and insured, you can claim against their liability coverage or sue them. This is the scenario that makes collision coverage or UMPD worth its premium in a city with this much unidentified-driver traffic.
