Hail Damage Repair in the San Fernando Valley
Hail is rare here and that’s exactly the problem — when a cell does drop ice on Sylmar or Sunland, nobody in the Valley has a routine for it, and out-of-town “storm chaser” repair crews show up within days offering to eat your deductible.
Hail damage is the textbook case for paintless dent repair: dozens of shallow dents with intact paint, priced per panel, paid under comprehensive coverage.

Why hail is a PDR job, not a paint job
Hailstones hit horizontal surfaces at near-vertical angles, so damage concentrates on the roof, hood, trunk lid, and upper fenders, with the door tops and roof rails catching whatever came in at an angle. The dents are typically shallow, round, and — crucially — leave the paint unbroken, because a hailstone spreads its energy over a blunt contact area rather than concentrating it like a rock chip.
Unbroken paint is what makes paintless dent repair the right tool. A technician works from behind each panel with rods and tips, pushing every dent back while reading the surface under a reflective line board. There’s no filler, no primer, no color match problem across a roof, and your factory finish stays intact — which matters enormously on a hail claim, because refinishing an entire roof, hood, and trunk creates a car with a repainted upper half.
Some hail damage does need conventional repair: stones large enough to crack paint at the impact point, damage on aluminum panels where the metal has stretched, dents on a hard body line, and anything over an internal brace where there’s no access from behind. A realistic hail estimate is usually mostly PDR with a handful of conventional panels.
Beyond the sheet metal: check the windshield and glass for chips and cracks, the plastic trim and mirror caps for cracks, the roof antenna and sunroof glass, and any exposed lamp lens. These get missed on quick hail estimates and they’re all legitimate parts of the same claim.
Hail damage triage
Cosmetic — dents with paint intact
No safety issue and no corrosion risk. But document it now with dated photos, because a claim gets harder to attribute to a specific storm as time passes.
Handle promptly — paint cracked at dent peaks
Larger stones can crack clear coat and color at the impact point. That’s a moisture path into bare metal and it means conventional repair on those panels rather than PDR.
Not drivable — cracked windshield or broken glass
A hail-cracked windshield in the driver’s line of sight is a safety and citation issue, and on vehicles with a windshield-mounted camera, replacement also requires ADAS recalibration.
Be careful with out-of-area storm-chaser crews. “We’ll waive your deductible” is generally insurance fraud, and when the paint lifts next summer they will not be in California.
How a hail repair runs at XP
Most hail jobs are 4 to 10 business days. The estimate itself takes longer than usual, because it’s counted panel by panel.
Panel-by-panel dent count under a light board
Hail estimates are built per panel by dent count and size, not by hours. Every panel gets counted under reflective lighting, which is why a proper hail inspection takes 45 minutes rather than five.
Sort each panel: PDR or conventional
Panels with intact paint and rear access go to PDR. Panels with cracked paint, stretched aluminum, or no access get conventional repair and refinish. You get a written breakdown of which is which and why.
Glass, trim, and hardware inspection
Windshield, sunroof, mirror caps, roof antenna, lamp lenses, and plastic trim all get inspected and put on the estimate. These are the items quick hail estimates routinely leave off.
PDR from behind each panel
Headliner drops for roof access, trim comes out for door tops and fenders. Every dent is worked individually against a reflected line. A hail-damaged roof can be several hours of concentrated work by one technician.
Conventional repair and refinish where needed
Cracked-paint panels get metalwork, skim filler if required, prime, seal, base and clear, blended into adjacent panels so the refinished area doesn’t read against the untouched factory paint.
Glass replacement and camera recalibration
Windshield replacement includes recalibration of any windshield-mounted forward camera, at $150–$600 per system depending on the vehicle. Then a full post-repair scan and a final inspection under proper light.
Hail damage repair cost in 2026
Hail is priced per panel and per dent, so severity drives everything. Published 2026 PDR pricing starts around $195 for a single ding and puts multi-panel hail damage at $1,200 to $4,000+.
Small dents on the roof and hood only, paint intact, PDR throughout. 2–4 days. Frequently close to a comprehensive deductible, so run the math before filing.
Roof, hood, trunk, upper fenders and door tops, dozens to low hundreds of dents, all or mostly PDR. 5–8 days. This is the typical hail claim.
Heavy dent density with panels needing conventional refinish, plus windshield and sunroof glass and camera recalibration. 2–3 weeks, and on older vehicles a total-loss determination becomes possible on cosmetic damage alone.
That last point surprises people: severe hail can total a car without any mechanical or structural damage whatsoever, purely because the cosmetic repair cost exceeds the vehicle’s actual cash value under California’s total loss formula. If that happens to you, read total loss vs. repair.

Hail is a comprehensive claim — and that changes things
Hail damage is covered by comprehensive coverage, not collision. Comprehensive handles damage from events outside your control — weather, theft, vandalism, falling objects — and it’s optional coverage in California. If you carry liability only, hail damage to your own car isn’t covered at all.
The mechanics are simple: your carrier pays the repair cost minus your comprehensive deductible, up to your policy limit. On a $4,000 hail repair with a $500 deductible, they issue $3,500 and you pay $500. Which means light hail on one or two panels may sit entirely under your deductible and not be worth filing.
Two things work in your favor here. Because hail is a weather event and not your fault, California regulations restrict surcharging you for it — a comprehensive weather claim is treated very differently from an at-fault collision. And some carriers waive the deductible on glass-only claims, so a hail-cracked windshield may be cheaper to claim than you expect.
The thing to be careful about is who does the work. After any hail event, out-of-state PDR crews arrive and offer to “cover your deductible” — which is generally insurance fraud that exposes you, not just them — then leave the state. When their repairs telegraph or their paint lifts a year later, there’s nobody to call. We’ve been at 1235 Truman for over twenty years and our workmanship warranty is lifetime, which only means something if the shop is still here.
Document the storm. Save a screenshot of the weather report or local news coverage with the date. Carriers verify that hail actually occurred at your location, and Valley hail events are small and localized.

Hail damage questions
Does hail damage really happen in Los Angeles?
Rarely, and locally. Cold winter storm cells occasionally drop small hail across the northern Valley and the foothills — Sylmar, Sunland-Tujunga, Lake View Terrace — and it’s typically pea to marble sized rather than the golf-ball hail that flattens cars in Texas. Small hail still dents hoods and roofs, and it’s still a valid comprehensive claim.
Will my insurance rate go up after a hail claim?
Hail is a comprehensive weather claim and by definition not your fault, and California regulations restrict surcharging drivers for not-at-fault losses. The claim appears in your history, which can affect comparisons when you shop, but it’s treated very differently from an at-fault collision.
Can all hail dents be fixed without paint?
Most, not all. Shallow dents with intact paint and rear access are ideal PDR candidates. Dents that cracked the paint, dents on stretched aluminum panels, dents on hard body lines, and dents directly over internal bracing need conventional repair and refinish. A realistic estimate mixes both, and we’ll show you the panel-by-panel breakdown.
Is it worth filing a hail claim for light damage?
Run it against your comprehensive deductible. Light hail on a hood and roof might be $700–$1,200, which against a $1,000 deductible isn’t worth filing. Moderate hail across every horizontal panel runs $1,500–$4,000 and clearly is. Get the inspection first, then decide — that’s free and takes about 45 minutes.
A company knocked on my door offering to fix my hail damage and waive my deductible. Should I?
No. Waiving or absorbing a deductible on an insurance claim is generally fraud, and it exposes you along with them. These crews follow storms across states, work fast, and are gone before problems surface — and when a rushed PDR job leaves high spots or a hasty respray lifts, there’s no one left to honor the warranty. Use a shop with a physical address you can drive to next year.
How long do I have to file a hail claim?
Check your policy for the notice requirement, but practically: file within days. Carriers verify that a hail event occurred at your location on the date you claim, and the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to distinguish storm damage from accumulated door dings. Dated photos taken the same day are the strongest evidence you can have.
