Car Door Dent Repair

The single most useful question about a door dent has nothing to do with its size: is the paint broken? If the finish is intact, we can usually massage the metal back from behind and you keep your factory paint forever. If it’s cracked, we’re in filler-and-refinish territory.

Run a fingernail across it. Catches on an edge or shows primer? That’s conventional repair. Smooth and shiny? That’s paintless dent repair, and it’s cheaper and faster.

Two very different repairs

PDR versus conventional door dent repair

Paintless dent repair (PDR) works because sheet metal has memory. A technician reaches behind the panel through the window channel or a drain access, and with specialized rods and tips pushes the low spot back up in dozens of tiny movements, reading the panel through a line board or reflective light. Done right, there’s nothing to detect afterward — no filler, no paint, no blend, no reduction in your car’s factory finish.

Conventional repair is what happens when the paint is cracked, the metal is stretched, or the dent sits on a body line where the steel has work-hardened past its ability to return. The area is sanded, worked with a stud welder or hammer and dolly, skim-filled, primed, sealed, sprayed, and blended. It’s an excellent repair, but the panel now has a refinished area with a paint history.

Door dents specifically favor PDR for one physical reason: doors are large, relatively flat, and easily accessible from the inside once the trim panel comes off. That’s a much better geometry than a roof rail or a quarter panel. A textbook shopping-cart dent in the middle of a door skin is close to the ideal PDR case.

The two things that disqualify a door dent from PDR: broken paint, and a crease running across a hard body line. Sharp creases stretch metal rather than displacing it, and stretched metal never returns to its exact original dimension no matter how patient the technician is.

Drive it or tow it?

How to read your own door dent

PDR candidate

Round or oval dent, paint fully intact, away from the door edge and off the hard body line. Typical door ding or cart strike. Half a day to a day, no paint.

Borderline

A shallow crease across a body line with unbroken paint, or a dent right at the door edge. Sometimes 80–90% improvable with PDR; we’ll tell you the honest expected result before you pay.

Conventional repair required

Paint cracked, primer or bare metal showing, sharp crease, or the dent sits over an internal brace. Needs filler and refinish with a blend into adjacent panels.

Dent came with a scrape and paint transfer? See deep scratch repair — it may be two repairs on one panel.

What we do with a dented door

PDR is often same-day. Conventional door dent repair runs 3 to 5 business days including cure time.

1

Light-board assessment before quoting

A dent that looks like one thing in the sun looks like another under a reflective line board. We assess with proper lighting and tell you PDR or conventional before money changes hands.

2

Access from behind the trim

For PDR, the door trim panel, weather shield and sometimes the window regulator come out so tools can reach the back of the skin. Careful trim removal matters — snapped clips are how a “paintless” repair adds a rattle.

3

Push, tap, read, repeat

The metal comes up in a hundred small increments, checked constantly against a reflected line. On a moderate door dent this is one to three hours of concentrated work by one technician.

4

Conventional path: metalwork before filler

If it needs refinish, the metal still gets worked back close to shape first with a stud welder or dolly. Filler is a skim to fair the surface, never a substitute for pulling the panel — thick filler cracks and reads as a shadow.

5

Refinish with adjacent-panel blend

Sealer, base coat mixed to your code and variance-matched, blended into the fender or quarter, then clear over the blend zone. Force-cured, denibbed, and polished.

6

Reassembly and rattle check

Trim, weather shield, and regulator back in with new clips where needed. Windows cycled, locks cycled, and the door shut-line checked before you get the keys.

2026 pricing

Door dent repair pricing in 2026

PDR is priced per dent by size and location, not by the hour. Published 2026 PDR pricing starts around $195 for a single door ding, with multi-panel work running much higher. Conventional repair is priced on body and refinish hours.

PDR — single door ding$195 – $450

One dime-to-golf-ball-sized dent, paint intact, accessible. Same day in most cases. No paint, no filler, factory finish preserved.

PDR — multiple dents or larger dent$450 – $1,100

Several dents on one door, or one large shallow dent requiring extended access and glue-pull work. 1–2 days.

Conventional — dent with broken paint$600 – $1,500

Metalwork, skim filler, prime, seal, refinish the door with blends into the fender and quarter. 3–5 days. Higher on pearls and tri-coats.

One economic note that matters: PDR does not just cost less, it protects value. A door with original factory paint and no refinish history is worth more at trade-in than an identical door with a perfect respray, because paint depth gauges and Carfax don’t lie. Where PDR is viable, it’s the better financial decision even at similar cost.

Insurance on door dents

Most door dents never reach a deductible

A $195 to $450 PDR repair is below almost every California deductible, so filing a claim gains you nothing and costs you a claim on your record. Pay cash, keep it off your file. That advice covers the majority of door dings, cart strikes, and someone-opened-their-door-into-yours incidents.

It changes when the dent is one of many. Multi-panel damage — a shopping cart run down the whole side, a vandalism spree, or hail — adds up fast and typically belongs on a claim, often under comprehensive rather than collision coverage. See hail damage repair for how per-panel PDR pricing works on a claim.

It also changes if you know who did it. A door dent from an identified at-fault driver is a third-party liability claim against their coverage with no deductible for you. If they left the scene, it’s a hit-and-run and your uninsured motorist or collision coverage is the path — details on hit-and-run repair.

Where insurers and shops disagree on dents: adjusters sometimes write PDR hours for a dent with cracked paint, because PDR is cheaper. Cracked paint cannot be PDR’d — the crack stays. We document the paint break with photos and supplement to conventional repair.

Leasing? Get door dents fixed before turn-in. Lease damage assessments charge retail body rates for dents that PDR would have handled for a fraction, and they charge per panel.

Door dent FAQ

Dent repair questions

How do I know if my door dent can be fixed without paint?

Drag a fingernail lightly across the deepest part. If it glides with no catch and you see no primer, gray, or bare metal, the paint is intact and PDR is likely. If your nail catches an edge or you see a color that isn’t your car’s, the paint is broken and it needs conventional repair and refinish.

Does paintless dent repair damage the paint over time?

No, when it’s done correctly. The metal is pushed from behind; the clear coat never gets touched. What can go wrong is a technician forcing a dent that’s too sharp, which stretches metal and can crack the clear at the peak of the crease. That’s why we assess under a light board first and decline the ones that shouldn’t be attempted.

Can you fix a dent on a door body line or crease?

Sometimes, partially. Creases along a hard body line stretch the metal rather than displacing it, so the honest expectation is major improvement rather than perfection — often 70–90%. We’ll tell you the realistic outcome first, and if you want it perfect, we’ll quote the conventional repair instead.

How many dents before it’s cheaper to just repaint the door?

Roughly five to eight small dents on one door is the crossover point in our shop, and it shifts with paint type. Above that, conventional repair with a single refinish is usually less than the per-dent PDR total — although you lose the factory-paint advantage, which matters on a newer car.

My door dent has a small paint chip in the middle. What now?

That’s a common hybrid case. We can PDR the dent to remove the deformation and then touch in the chip, which is far cheaper than a full panel refinish and reads well from a normal viewing distance. It’s not concours-perfect, but for a daily driver it’s the best value on this page.

Will a door dent lead to rust in Southern California?

Not from humidity — the Valley is dry. But any break in the paint that reaches bare metal will eventually corrode, and the lower door crimp is where it starts because that’s where water sits. If your dent has broken paint, seal it or repair it within a few months rather than a few years.
