Your “bumper” is actually four separate parts
When you say bumper, you mean the painted plastic skin. That is the bumper cover, and it is the cheapest piece of the assembly. Behind it sits an energy absorber — usually a block of dense foam or a honeycomb crush box — then a reinforcement bar made of steel or aluminum bolted to the frame rails, and finally the crush cans that are engineered to collapse in a specific way so the rails behind them survive.
That layering is why two cars with identical-looking scuffs get wildly different estimates. A 12 mph tap that only creases the cover is a refinish job. The same impact on a car whose crush cans folded means the reinforcement has to come off, the mounting points get measured, and the rail tips get checked before anything goes back on. We don’t guess at that — we pull the cover and look.
The other thing hiding back there is sensors. Any car from roughly 2016 onward has parking sonar pucks pressed into the cover, and 2018-and-newer vehicles frequently carry the forward radar module and blind-spot radars behind the fascia. A bumper R&I that ignores calibration leaves you with a car that looks repaired and a collision-avoidance system aimed at the wrong part of the road.
Can you drive on a damaged bumper?
Usually yes — scuffed cover
Cracks, scrapes, and paint transfer with everything still bolted tight are cosmetic. Drive it, book the repair at your convenience, and photograph it before the first rain in case rust starts at a paint break.
Careful — cover sagging or gapping
A cover pulling away from the fender means broken tabs or a bent absorber. It will hold at surface speeds, but airflow on the 210 or 405 can rip it the rest of the way off. Get in this week.
Tow it — bumper dragging or coolant on the pavement
Anything touching the tire, hanging below the frame, or accompanied by a puddle means the impact went past the cover. Call us for a free tow-in within 10 miles on insurance claims.
If the bumper is already loose and you’re a few miles out, see hanging bumper repair for how to secure it without making the damage worse.
How a bumper job actually runs at XP
Most bumper repairs are 2 to 5 business days. Here’s where the time goes.
Teardown and photo documentation
The cover comes off within the first hour. We photograph the absorber, reinforcement, and rail tips for the file — that documentation is what gets a supplement approved later if the insurer’s photo estimate missed hidden damage.
Repair-or-replace call
Thermoplastic covers can be nitrogen-plastic-welded if the crack is clean and away from a mounting tab. Torn tabs, stretched flex zones, and cracks radiating through a sensor bore mean replacement. We show you the part and the decision.
Substrate prep and adhesion promoter
Plastic doesn’t take paint like steel. Sanding, flex-additive primer, and adhesion promoter on olefin substrates. Skipping the promoter is the single most common reason a cheap bumper repaint peels at the car wash six months later.
Refinish and texture match
Color is mixed to your paint code, then variance-matched to the actual panel — sun-faded silver never matches a fresh code mix. Lower valance textures get re-grained so the repair doesn’t read glossy against factory matte.
Sensor reinstall and calibration
Park sonar reseated in factory-orientation, then any forward radar or camera affected by the R&I gets a static or dynamic recalibration on our ADAS targets. See ADAS calibration.
Fitment and gap check before you see it
Bumper-to-fender and bumper-to-hood gaps get set to factory spec with a gauge, not by eye. Uneven gaps are the tell that a shop rushed reassembly, and they’re the first thing a future buyer notices.
What bumper repair costs in 2026
California carries the highest body labor rate in the country — around $105/hour against a $75 national average, which is why the same bumper costs more here than in Phoenix (RepairSnap labor data). Published 2026 ranges for the work itself:
Scuff, scrape, or single clean crack. Sand, fill, blend, clear. No sensors touched. Typically 1–2 days and often under a $500 deductible, meaning you may be better off paying cash.
New cover, absorber, clips and brackets, full refinish with a blend into the adjacent fender or quarter. This is the most common bumper invoice we write. 3–4 days.
Reinforcement bar, crush cans, radar module, park sensors, and recalibration. Sensor-heavy trucks, EVs, and luxury platforms sit at the top of this band. 5–8 days depending on parts.
Two line items drive more disputes than anything else: blend time into the adjacent panel (unavoidable on metallics) and calibration, which runs $150–$600 per system in 2026 and is a documented OEM requirement, not an upsell (CalibrateSync). We write both with the OEM procedure attached.

When a bumper claim is worth filing — and when it isn’t
Bumper damage sits right at the deductible line, which makes it the one repair where filing a claim is genuinely a judgment call. If your deductible is $1,000 and the repair is a $550 cover refinish, filing gets you nothing and puts a claim on your CLUE report. If the estimate lands at $2,400 because the radar module and reinforcement are involved, file it.
If someone else hit you, this is a third-party property damage claim against their liability coverage — and since January 1, 2025, California’s minimum property damage limit rose from $5,000 to $15,000 under SB 1107, so there is far more room than there used to be for a bumper claim to be paid in full by the at-fault carrier without touching your policy.
Under California Insurance Code §758.5 the choice of shop is yours, not the adjuster’s. We bill directly to Allstate (we’re a DRP partner), Geico, State Farm, Progressive, Farmers, Mercury, AAA, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, and USAA, and we handle the supplement when the drive-by photo estimate came in at $600 for a job that needs $1,900 of parts.
Getting steered? An adjuster suggesting their “network” shop is a suggestion. Say you’re using XP Auto Center, give them (818) 336-1000, and we take it from there.

What people ask before they book a bumper
Can a cracked bumper be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, yes. Modern covers are thermoplastic, so a clean crack away from a mounting tab or sensor bore can be nitrogen-welded, reinforced from the back, filled, and refinished for a fraction of a replacement. What can’t be saved: torn mounting tabs, cracks running through a sonar hole, and covers that have gone brittle from ten years of Valley sun.
How long will my car be at the shop for bumper work?
A repair-and-refinish is 2–3 business days. A cover replacement with a blend is 3–4. If the reinforcement bar or a radar module is on the order, plan on 5–8 days, and most of that is the parts truck, not the paint booth.
Do I need a rental car for a bumper repair?
For a 2-day cosmetic repair, most people skip it. If we’re replacing the reinforcement or waiting on a radar module, ask your adjuster to open rental coverage — we coordinate directly with Enterprise and Hertz and can time the drop so you’re not paying for idle rental days while parts are in transit.
Will the new paint match my ten-year-old bumper?
It has to be blended, not just sprayed. We mix to your paint code, then spray-out a test card and adjust for how your actual clear has faded, then blend into the adjacent fender or quarter so the eye never catches an edge. On silvers, pearls, and tri-coat whites the blend panel isn’t optional.
My bumper looks fine but the parking sensors beep constantly since the accident. Why?
Either a sonar puck got knocked out of its factory angle in its retainer, or the impact cracked the sensor housing, or the cover was reinstalled a few millimeters proud and the sensor is now reading the cover itself. All three are common after a quick bumper reinstall. We scan, re-seat, and recalibrate.
Is an aftermarket bumper cover as good as OEM?
For a plain painted cover on an older car, a certified aftermarket part usually fits acceptably and saves real money. For anything with sensor bores, radar windows, or a heated washer nozzle, we push for OEM — aftermarket sensor geometry is the number one cause of a calibration that won’t complete. If your policy specifies aftermarket parts and we think it’s a problem, we tell you before we order.
