Side-Impact and T-Bone Collision Repair
Side impacts are the least forgiving crashes on the road. In a front collision you have three feet of engineered crush zone between you and the other car. In a T-bone you have a door skin, an intrusion beam, and about eight inches.
That’s why side-impact repairs are structural repairs almost by definition — and why the pillar, rocker, and roof rail measurements matter more here than anywhere else on the vehicle.

The B-pillar is the whole ballgame
Modern side-impact protection is built from ultra-high-strength steel: a B-pillar (the post between your front and rear doors) made of boron or press-hardened steel, a rocker panel running along the sill, a roof rail above, and door intrusion beams spanning each door. These parts are engineered to be extremely strong and, crucially, not repairable by heating and straightening. Their strength comes from a heat treatment that any straightening process destroys.
That single fact drives everything about side-impact repair. Manufacturers publish specific procedures stating whether a given pillar or rocker can be sectioned at all, and if so, exactly where the cut and weld can be placed. Some pillars are replace-only. A shop that heat-straightens a boron B-pillar delivers a car that looks correct and offers a fraction of its designed side-impact protection to the next driver who runs a light.
The restraint side is equally specific. Side impacts deploy curtain airbags from the roof rail, often seat-mounted thorax airbags, and sometimes a far-side or center airbag. Curtain airbag replacement means dropping the headliner and pillar trim, which becomes a substantial labor item on its own. The side-impact crash sensors in the doors and pillars are single-use.
Then there’s the geometry. A hard side hit pushes the rocker inward, which twists the floor pan and can move the front and rear door openings in opposite directions. Symptoms you can see: doors that won’t close, uneven gaps along the whole side, a sunroof that binds, and glass that won’t seal. This is why we measure the entire body — not just the impact area — on every T-bone that comes in.
Local note: intersection collisions are where this happens. Sepulveda and Devonshire, Truman and Maclay, the left-turn pockets along San Fernando Road. Cars come to us from these intersections weekly, and the pattern is consistent — moderate closing speed, heavy structural involvement.
After a T-bone
Almost always: tow it
If curtain airbags deployed, a door won’t close, glass is broken out, or you can see a bent pillar, the car is structurally compromised. It shouldn’t be driven. Free tow-in within 10 miles on covered claims.
Get in immediately — doors gap unevenly
Uneven gaps along the whole side, a sunroof that binds, or a rear door that suddenly needs a shove all point to a moved rocker or twisted floor. Drivable to us and nowhere else.
Genuinely cosmetic side contact
A scraped door and mirror from a low-speed sideswipe with normal door operation and no airbag light. Real, and it happens — usually in parking structures rather than intersections.

How we repair a side impact
Three to six weeks is typical on structural side work. The measurement session comes before the estimate, always.
Whole-body measurement, not just the impact side
The vehicle goes on the bench and every datum point gets measured — both sides, front to back. Side impacts twist floor pans, so the undamaged side tells us how far the damaged side moved.
Pull OEM sectioning documentation for your VIN
Before touching the pillar or rocker we retrieve the manufacturer’s procedure: replace-only or sectionable, exact cut location, weld type, adhesive spec, and any required reinforcement. That document goes in your file with the estimate.
Structural correction on the bench
The body is anchored and pulled back to factory dimension, verified by re-measurement rather than by eye. Ultra-high-strength components are replaced or sectioned per procedure — never heat-straightened.
Curtain and thorax airbag replacement
Headliner and pillar trim out, roof-rail curtain bags and seat-mounted thorax bags replaced, side-impact sensors replaced, SRS module handled per OEM post-deployment procedure. Then verified by scan, not by clearing codes.
Doors, quarter panel, rocker skin, and glass
Doors hung to the corrected opening, quarter panel replaced or sectioned at the OEM joint, rocker skin refinished, and side glass and seals replaced so the cabin seals and doesn’t whistle.
Blind-spot calibration, alignment, and full verification
Blind-spot and mirror-camera systems recalibrated, four-wheel alignment performed because side impacts move subframes, then a water test and a 55 mph road test before delivery.
T-bone and side-impact repair cost in 2026
Published side-impact data puts minor cosmetic side damage at around $1,500 and severe structural side damage above $15,000, with a documented moderate band of $6,000–$20,000 once airbags and structure are involved. Published severity tiers:
Single door replacement, paint blend, no airbag deployment, no structural intrusion. Lower-speed side contact and parking-structure sideswipes. 1–2 weeks.
Both doors, B-pillar repair, rocker panel section replacement, quarter panel, and curtain airbag if deployed. 3–4 weeks.
Pillar replacement, floor pan correction, multiple airbags, glass, and full system recalibration. This is where total-loss determinations become likely on anything but a newer or higher-value vehicle. 5–8 weeks.
Two things drive these numbers above front and rear equivalents: curtain airbags (replacement plus headliner labor, part of the $3,000–$7,000+ range published for multiple airbag deployment) and ultra-high-strength steel, where replace-only components leave no cheaper repair path available at any labor rate.

T-bones are the most contested fault determinations in California
Nobody T-bones anybody on purpose, and in most of these collisions both drivers genuinely believe they had the light. That makes side-impact claims the most disputed category we handle, and it makes evidence decisive: the police report, any traffic or business security camera at the intersection, dashcam footage, and independent witnesses.
Get the report number at the scene and give it to your carrier the same day. If a business on the corner has a camera, ask them immediately — most systems overwrite within days to weeks. Under California’s comparative negligence rules, fault gets apportioned by percentage, so partial recovery is common and worth fighting for even when you’re not fully cleared.
While fault is being sorted out, use your own collision coverage. Your carrier pays for the repair now, you pay your deductible, and they pursue the other carrier through subrogation. If they recover, your deductible typically comes back. Waiting for a disputed liability determination before starting repairs can leave your car sitting for months.
The claim-specific fight on side impacts is almost always about the pillar. Adjusters write repair hours; the OEM procedure often says replace. We attach the manufacturer’s position statement and the printed measurements, and that documentation is what carries the supplement. This is the single most important reason not to let a low estimate stand on a T-bone.
Structural side repair permanently changes what your car is worth. If the other driver was at fault, pursue diminished value — on a T-bone it is often thousands of dollars.

Can a bent B-pillar be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?
It depends entirely on the manufacturer’s published procedure for your specific vehicle. Many modern B-pillars are press-hardened boron steel and are replace-only, because heating and straightening destroys the heat treatment that gives them their strength. Some are sectionable at one specified location with a specified weld. We pull the procedure for your VIN and show it to you rather than making a judgment call.
How bad does a T-bone have to be before the car is totaled?
Faster than most people expect. Published moderate side-impact ranges run $6,000–$20,000 once curtain airbags and structure are involved, so on a vehicle worth $12,000 a moderate T-bone frequently exceeds repair viability. The determination is repair cost plus salvage value against actual cash value — the mechanics of that are on our total loss versus repair page.
Why did my curtain airbag deploy but not the front airbags?
Because they’re triggered by different sensors reading different force vectors. Side-impact sensors in the doors and pillars fire curtain and thorax bags on lateral acceleration; front bags respond to longitudinal deceleration. In a clean T-bone you’d expect side bags without front bags — that’s the system working exactly as designed.
My car was T-boned but the doors still open and close fine. Is it still structural?
Possibly. Doors that operate correctly are good evidence but not proof, because a rocker can be deformed while the door openings stay within tolerance. The only way to know is measurement, and on any side impact hard enough to require panel work we measure the whole body. If it’s clean, that’s genuinely great news and we’ll tell you.
The other driver says I ran the light. What do I do?
Immediately: get the police report number, note every business on that corner that might have a camera, and preserve your dashcam footage before it loops over. Then file on your own collision coverage so the repair can start while liability is contested. Camera footage from a corner store is the single most common thing that resolves these cases, and it usually gets overwritten within a week or two.
Is the repaired side of my car as strong as the original?
If the ultra-high-strength components were replaced rather than straightened, sectioned only where the OEM permits, welded to the specified process, and verified by measurement — yes, it meets the manufacturer’s specification. That is the entire reason those procedures exist and the reason I-CAR Gold Class certification requires documented training on them. Our lifetime workmanship warranty is written on that basis.
