Ten years ago, EV repair meant a Prius. Today it means Model 3s, Model Ys, Mach-Es, Lightnings, Rivians, Ioniqs, and a growing list of luxury and mainstream electric vehicles on Valley streets. These cars are not just gas cars with batteries. They are built differently, repaired differently, and dangerous to fix incorrectly.
Why EV Repair Is Different
Three things separate EV collision repair from traditional collision work:
High-voltage systems. An EV battery pack operates at 400 to 800 volts. Contact with a compromised pack can be fatal. Certified EV technicians follow specific de-energization protocols before any repair — disconnecting the high-voltage system, verifying zero voltage, and following torque-and-tag procedures throughout the repair.
Aluminum-intensive construction. Teslas in particular use aluminum body structures. Aluminum requires completely different welding equipment, different repair procedures, and physical isolation from steel work to prevent galvanic corrosion. You cannot repair aluminum in the same bay you repair steel. Cross-contamination is a real problem.
Integrated electronics and ADAS. EVs are the leading edge of ADAS integration. Cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and battery management systems all interact. Post-repair calibration is more involved than on comparable gas vehicles.
Tesla-Specific Considerations
Tesla operates its own approved shop network. Approved shops must meet specific tooling, training, and facility requirements — and they get access to Tesla’s parts distribution and technical documentation. Non-approved shops cannot get Tesla parts through official channels, and they don’t have access to Tesla’s repair procedures.
Tesla body construction varies by model. Model S and X use extensive aluminum. Model 3 and Y use a hybrid steel/aluminum structure. The Cybertruck introduces stainless steel panels that require yet another set of procedures. Each of these requires different techniques.
The Battery Safety Protocol
Any collision that involves the underbody, rocker panels, or rear structure of an EV requires battery pack inspection. Even without visible damage, an impact can compromise internal battery cells or the cooling system. Symptoms can appear days or weeks later — range loss, charging faults, or thermal events.
Our EV protocol includes:
- Full high-voltage system de-energization before any body work
- Battery pack visual inspection and diagnostic scan
- Coolant system integrity check
- Insulation resistance testing on high-voltage cables
- Post-repair diagnostic scan and drive cycle
If diagnostics indicate any battery concern, the pack is removed and inspected by qualified personnel. On some vehicles that means returning the pack to the OEM. On others it means a certified third-party battery specialist.
ADAS on EVs
Every major EV on the road today has extensive driver assistance. Tesla’s Autopilot suite. Ford’s BlueCruise. GM’s Super Cruise. Rivian’s Driver+. Hyundai and Kia’s Highway Driving Assist. All of these rely on cameras and radar that must be recalibrated after any collision affecting their mounting points.
Windshield replacement alone triggers full ADAS calibration on most EVs because the forward-facing camera lives at the top of the windshield. Bumper cover replacement triggers radar recalibration. Even mirror replacement can require blind spot sensor calibration.
Why a Generic Shop Can’t Do This Work Right
An excellent shop for a Camry may not have the equipment or training for a Model Y. Specifically, they may lack:
- Aluminum-dedicated repair area with isolated tooling
- Aluminum MIG or spool gun welding equipment
- High-voltage safety training and PPE
- OEM scan tools for EV-specific diagnostics
- Manufacturer certifications required for parts access
- ADAS calibration facilities meeting EV requirements
Without these, the shop is either sending your car out for critical portions of the work, or doing the work incorrectly. Neither is a good outcome for an $80,000 vehicle with a battery pack that could ignite if handled wrong.
What to Look for in an EV-Capable Shop
When you’re shopping repair options for your EV, ask specifically:
- Do you have manufacturer certification for my vehicle?
- Do you have a dedicated aluminum repair area?
- Who does your high-voltage de-energization and battery diagnostics?
- Do you perform ADAS calibration in-house?
- What OEM scan tools do you have subscriptions for?
If the answers are vague, keep looking.
