ADAS Calibration After a Collision: Why Your Cameras and Radar Need Re-Aiming

Twenty years ago, a collision repair was mostly about metal and paint. Today, half of the repair on a modern vehicle is invisible — it’s the recalibration of cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and lidar that sit behind bumpers, in mirrors, and along the windshield. Skip that part and your car looks fine, drives fine, and might quietly not brake when a child steps out.

What ADAS Actually Is

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — the collection of safety and convenience features that use sensors to monitor the road around your vehicle. Common ADAS systems include:

  • Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning and lane keeping assist
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • 360-degree camera and parking sensors
  • Traffic sign recognition

Every one of these depends on sensors being aimed exactly where the factory aimed them. Move the sensor by a few millimeters or a fraction of a degree, and the system’s picture of the world is wrong.

Why Calibration Is Required After a Collision

Even a moderate hit can shift a bumper cover, bend a bracket, or torque a radar unit’s mounting point. The sensor itself may look undamaged, but its aim relative to the vehicle’s centerline is now off. The car doesn’t know that. It keeps operating the ADAS system based on the sensor’s reported position — which is now lying to it.

OEM repair procedures are specific: any time a sensor is removed, replaced, disturbed, or a related component (like a bumper, grille, mirror, or windshield) is removed, calibration is required. Some manufacturers also require calibration after wheel alignment, ride height changes, or airbag deployment.

Static vs Dynamic Calibration

There are two calibration methods, and many vehicles require both.

Static calibration happens in the shop. The vehicle is parked on a perfectly level surface. Physical targets — printed panels with specific patterns — are placed at precise distances and heights around the vehicle. The scan tool then guides the sensor through a self-alignment sequence using the targets as reference. Static calibration requires controlled space, controlled lighting, and manufacturer-specific target sets. Different automakers use different targets. Honda targets are not Ford targets.

Dynamic calibration happens on the road. The vehicle has to be driven at specific speeds, on specific road types, with specific lane markings visible, for a specific duration. The scan tool is connected during the drive and the sensor learns from real-world inputs. Dynamic drives can take 20 minutes to over an hour, and if traffic or road conditions don’t meet spec, the calibration fails and has to be redone.

What Happens If Calibration Is Skipped

The car will still drive. That’s the dangerous part. All the ADAS features will still appear to work — no dashboard warning lights, no error codes in most cases. But the system’s understanding of the world is off.

A forward-facing camera aimed one degree low starts seeing the road surface as an obstacle. Automatic emergency braking might slam on for no reason. A radar unit aimed slightly left might not see a vehicle in the adjacent lane before you change into it. Lane keeping assist might steer you toward the shoulder instead of away from it.

Why Most Shops Can’t Actually Do This

Proper ADAS calibration requires:

  • A dedicated calibration bay with a certified level floor
  • Manufacturer-specific target sets (they cost thousands per set)
  • OEM-level scan tools with current subscriptions
  • Controlled lighting without shadows or glare
  • Technicians trained on the calibration procedures

Many shops simply don’t have this. They either sublet the calibration to a specialist (which adds days to the repair) or, worse, skip it and hope. When you’re picking a body shop, ADAS capability is one of the most important things to ask about.
