Curb Rash, Scratched Rims, and Bent Wheels: What’s Fixable and What Isn’t

Curbs win almost every argument with wheels. If you drive in the Valley, you’ve probably scraped one on a tight parallel park in Old Town, at a Target parking lot, or coming off the 405. Sometimes it’s cosmetic. Sometimes the wheel is actually bent. Here’s how we tell the difference and what’s actually fixable.

The Three Levels of Wheel Damage

Wheel damage falls into three categories, and the fix — or whether there is a fix — depends on which one you’re dealing with.

Level 1: Cosmetic curb rash. The outer lip of the wheel has been scraped against a curb. Paint or clearcoat is gouged. There may be aluminum showing through. The wheel is structurally fine — you just don’t want to look at it. This is very repairable.

Level 2: Bent flange or lip. The impact was hard enough to physically deform the outer edge of the wheel. You may feel a vibration at highway speed, or the tire may leak air where the bead seat is compromised. Some bends can be straightened, some cannot.

Level 3: Structural crack. A crack has formed in the wheel — usually near the bead seat, at a spoke, or through the barrel. Cracks in wheels grow. They cause air leaks, then vibration, then catastrophic failure. Most cracks mean replacement.

Cosmetic Curb Rash Repair

The process for cosmetic curb rash is straightforward:

  1. Wheel comes off the car, tire dismounted if the damage is near the bead.
  2. Damaged area is sanded to remove burrs and level the gouges.
  3. Deeper gouges are filled with epoxy or metallic filler.
  4. The repair area is sanded smooth and blended into the surrounding surface.
  5. Primer, base coat, and clear coat are applied — either to the repair area with blend, or to the full face of the wheel for a factory-like finish.
  6. Wheel is reinstalled, tire remounted, balanced, and torqued to spec.

The result is a wheel that looks like new. Cost is usually $150 to $300 per wheel depending on damage extent and finish complexity.

Bent Wheels — What Can Be Straightened

Not every bent wheel is a lost cause. Wheel straightening specialists use hydraulic presses to reshape aluminum wheels back to spec. The process works best on:

  • Outer lip bends less than about half an inch
  • Bends without cracks
  • Cast aluminum wheels (some flow-formed)
  • Standard OEM designs without excessively thin spokes

After straightening, the wheel is checked on a runout gauge to verify it’s within spec (usually 0.030 inches radial and lateral). Then pressure tested for leaks. If it passes both, it’s returned to service. Cost is typically $100 to $200 per wheel.

What can’t be straightened: severe bends, cracks, magnesium wheels (which shatter rather than bend), and most forged wheels. Forged aluminum is much harder than cast — harder to bend in the first place, harder to un-bend when it does bend.

Alloy vs Steel vs Magnesium

Wheel material matters when it comes to repair.

Aluminum alloy — the vast majority of modern OEM and aftermarket wheels. Cast, flow-formed, or forged. Repairable, straightenable in many cases, and TIG-weldable for certain crack repairs.

Steel — found on some economy vehicles and older trucks. Steel wheels are heavier but very repairable. Bends can often be pounded back into shape. Rust is the more common issue.

Magnesium — rare, found on some high-performance and race vehicles. Extremely light, but brittle. Magnesium wheels crack rather than bend, and cracks are almost never safely repairable. If you own a magnesium-wheeled vehicle, inspect them regularly — damage progresses fast.

Why Forged Wheels Are Trickier

Forged wheels are pressure-formed from a single billet of aluminum. The grain structure is denser and stronger than cast aluminum. That’s why forged wheels can be made lighter with thinner spokes without sacrificing strength.

Repair challenges with forged wheels:

  • Straightening requires more force — not all specialists have the presses for it.
  • Welding forged aluminum requires more skill and specific rod materials.
  • Any repair changes the grain structure locally, and forged wheels’ strength advantage comes from that structure.
  • Cosmetic finishes on forged wheels are often more complex — brushed, machined, or two-tone.

Many forged wheel manufacturers explicitly do not warranty repaired wheels. If yours is a set of BBS, HRE, Vossen, or similar, weigh the repair carefully against replacement value.

When to Replace

Some damage isn’t worth repairing. Replace when:

  • Structural cracks are present, especially near the bead seat or through the barrel.
  • Multiple deep bends exist around the wheel’s circumference.
  • The wheel has been previously repaired and damaged again in the same area.
  • The wheel is magnesium and has any crack.
  • Runout after straightening exceeds spec.
  • The repair cost exceeds 60 to 70 percent of a replacement wheel.

The TPMS Consideration

Every vehicle since 2008 has TPMS sensors inside the wheel. When we dismount for repair, we inspect them — sensors last 5 to 10 years. If yours is at end of life, we’ll recommend replacement while the tire is already off.
